Damian Williams has announced he will resign from his role as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York next month.
In a release, Williams said his last day will be Dec. 13. Edward Kim, who currently serves as deputy U.S. attorney, will become the acting U.S. attorney when Williams steps down.
“Today is a bittersweet day for me, as I announce my resignation as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York,” Williams said in a statement. “It is bitter in the sense that I am leaving my dream job, leading an institution I love that is filled with the finest public servants in the world."
"It is sweet in that I am confident I am leaving at a time when the Office is functioning at an incredibly high level — upholding and exceeding its already high standard of excellence, integrity, and independence," he added.
News of Williams' departure comes after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Jay Clayton to serve as U.S. attorney in Manhattan.
Clayton served as chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump's first term.
Williams has been behind many high-profile cases, including the federal corruption case against Mayor Eric Adams.
