A summer staple is set to go off with a bang Thursday night as the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks show returns to New York City.

Lighting up the city skyline since 1976, the 48th annual show is free and open to the public. This year, the fireworks will be launched from five barges set up on the Hudson River, as Macy’s previously announced it is moving the display from the East River for the first time in over a decade.

The barges will be positioned between West 14th and West 34th streets in Manhattan. Macy’s says its show is the nation’s largest Independence Day celebration.

Here’s what you need to know about the festivities.

Where can I watch the fireworks in person?

Macy’s has designated several sites as official “public viewing areas” it says offer the best vantages for the show.

In Manhattan, viewing areas will be set up at Christopher Street and Washington Street; West 11th Street and Washington Street; West 12th Street and Washington Street; West 29th Street and 11th Avenue; and West 40th Street and 11th Avenue.

The Christopher Street and West 40th Street locations are ADA accessible, with ADA access to the West 40th Street site at West 41st Street and 11th Avenue.

If you’re viewing the fireworks from across the river in Hoboken, New Jersey, Pier A Park, Maxwell Place Park, Stevens Park and Elysian Park are all official viewing points.

The fireworks display will launch at approximately 9:25 p.m., according to Macy's. A map of the viewing locations is available on its website.

How can I watch the fireworks on television?

NBC and Peacock will carry the two-hour fireworks show starting at 8 p.m. The television version includes musical performances by Brandy Clark, Luis Fonsi, Tanner Adell, Mickey Guyton, The War And Treaty, Amber Mark and Lainey Wilson, among others.

Guyton and “Access Hollywood’s” Zuri Hall will co-host the show.

What can I bring to watch the fireworks?

If you’re planning to watch from an official viewing point, for security reasons Macy’s does not permit lawn chairs, blankets, tents, umbrellas, large bags, large backpacks, weapons of any kind, illegal substances, alcohol, glass containers of any kind, large or hard-sided coolers, picnic baskets, flagpoles, skateboards, scooters or personal motorized vehicles.

Viewing points are managed by the NYPD, so spectators are subject to search, Macy’s said.

What can I expect from the show?

Macy’s says the 48th edition of the fireworks display will feature “more than 60,000 shells, more than 30 colors and never-before-seen effects,” adding that the “pyrotechnics will reach 1,000 feet and fall to the water’s edge.”

Designs debuting this year include one that was custom-made to be “a silver cascading burst,” creating “a center kaleidoscope and alternating red and blue as it fills the sky,” according to Macy’s.

This year’s musical score leans into the theme of “summer’s greatest hits,” with each musical artist reimagining an iconic seasonal song, spanning a variety of genres and decades.

Grammy and Emmy Award-winner Jason Howland is producing and arranging the score, Macy’s said.
