  • According to investigators, a 49-year-old had been asking for tips as he held an emergency gate open, allowing riders to avoid the fare. At that time, he tried snatching a woman’s purse

  • Police arrested Matthew Roesche, the attempted robber, immediately after the incident. Officials said he was known to the department

“He looks very calm, pulls out a gun, fires two shots calmly, puts the gun back in the bag and walks away. I mean, it is weird. The point is that that’s not what we need from anyone in this system,” said Richard Davey, MTA president.

The NYPD received a call just after 9 p.m. on Monday. According to investigators, a 49-year-old man had been asking for tips as he held an emergency gate open, allowing riders to avoid the fare.

At that time, he tried snatching a woman’s purse. Police said that’s when Rote pulled out the gun, firing toward him. No one was hurt.

“Listen, this is not a Charles Bronson area with ‘Death Wish,’” Mayor Eric Adams said on WABC’s “Eyewitness News” Wednesday evening. “Let the police do their job. Don’t think that you can do their job without the proper training that comes from law enforcement.”

Police arrested Matthew Roesche, the attempted robber, immediately after the incident. Officials said he was known to the department.

“He’s been arrested for hand collecting and selling swipes, bending MetroCards,” said Steven Hill, NYPD inspector.

“We’ve been working or talking to the DA about some of these issues for sure. This isn’t just about theft of service. Some of these swipers are damaging thousands of dollars’ worth of machines. It’s gotta end,” Davey said.

According to NYPD data, overall crime and shooting incidents were down in October compared to the same time last year. However, transit crime last month was up nearly 6% but down compared to last year.

“Weapons shouldn’t be on the streets of New York. They are, and if that occurs, then what happens in the streets comes down to our subways,” Davey said.

Police said Rote was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and menacing.
