Joshua Bell, 19, walked out of the 5th Precinct station house in handcuffs on Friday. According to officials, he is charged with Liu’s murder.
“I think it’s fantastic. It was a brutal crime,” neighbor Howie Castiglione said.
Neighbors like Castiglione say they remember walking out of their homes and seeing police outside the Market Street apartment building in Manhattan.
According to police, Bell and a 16-year-old followed Liu’s husband inside the building. While attempting to rob the man, Liu stepped outside their apartment and was shot and killed.
“It was a horrific crime. I think people just have to be aware. I’m not concerned because I pay attention, but I did tell my wife that she should be more aware,” Castiglione said.
Following the murder, neighbors say they had conversations about being more careful when walking into their buildings to make sure no one follows them inside.
“My partner, she has taught me to be vigilant. Before I wouldn’t think of anything like that, and then the more you hear stories about it, it’s a fine balance between living afraid and being aware,” neighbor Carlo Marks said.
The 16-year-old was arrested shortly after the shooting, also facing murder charges.
The NYPD are telling people to be aware of their surrounding when entering their buildings, and to not let anyone they don’t know follow them inside.
