Randall’s Island is typically brimming with thousands of colorfully clothed electronic music fans on Labor Day weekend, but this year tells a different story.
“On our way, literally in the car, pulling into New York, we got a notification, not even a notification. Someone called us saying it’s canceled,” said Ashely Salter, festivalgoer from New Jersey.

Less than three-and-a-half hours before the first day of Electric Zoo festival was set to begin, organizers announced on social media that Friday’s line-up would be cancelled because the main stage was not finished.
“We thought it was a joke. OK, you’re pulling a prank on us. But then they had on their Instagram and a text. I was about to cry. We planned our all day one outfits, ready to go,” said Salter.
EZoo posted this statement, which reads in part, “The global supply chain disruptions have impacted industries worldwide, and, sadly, our beloved festival has not been immune. These unexpected delays have prevented us from completing the construction of the main stage in time for Day 1.”
“We were in the car on the way to New York City and just checking information for the day and a message came up and we kind of thought it was a joke, we thought maybe they would jump on and say, ‘We’re just kidding, we’re super excited.’ But they did not,” said Angela Sciumbata, who drove from Pennsylvania to Manhattan Friday morning so she could attend the festival with her friends.
“I’m a mom, so I had to find a sitter for my daughter,” said Sciumbata. “I’m also a business owner so I had to close up the shop for today. As well as my friends who had to take off the day from work and miss that. Plus, pay for a hotel to be here, so there was a lot involved in it.”
Desperate to find an alternative, she quickly secured tickets to an impromptu party in Williamsburg, featuring one of the DJs originally slated to play Friday at EZoo.
“I just jumped on quick because I didn’t want to miss out because all the other after parties sold out really quickly once EZoo announced the cancellation,” said Sciumbata.
Headliners for Friday included some of the biggest names in electronic music like The Chainsmokers, Excision, Griz and New York-native Eli Escobar.
Fans say they’re disappointed that organizers waited until the last minute to cancel.
“We had plenty of other plans that we could’ve been in on so yeah it’s super disappointing plus there’s a lot of great artists, so that’s obviously a heartbreaker,” said Sciumbata.
But Sciumbata says she hopes that Saturday will go smoothly and her trip will ultimately be worth it.
“I try and stay really positive, so I try to put out good energy, good vibes, then tomorrow’s gonna be fun,” said Sciumbata.
