Three people were injured after multiple manhole fires broke out in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

The FDNY first got the call around 4:30 a.m. about the fires on East 56th Street near 1st Avenue.

A few hours later, one of the manholes exploded causing multiple power outages on that block, along with rising carbon monoxide levels.

Neighbors said it was quite a shocking start to the day.

"I was awakened this morning by a loud boom probably around 7 o'clock. Sounded like an explosion to me, but I didn't hear any fire engines or anything so I didn't think anything about it, I figured something," said resident Nick Stuart. "And then about 20 minutes later there was another one, and still didn't hear any fire engines or anything"

Con Edison says the fires caused some damage to nearby cars and storefronts.

Three people were taken to local hospitals, including a firefighter and EMS member.

The carbon monoxide levels have gone back down, but power remained cut on the street while crews continued to work.
