Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is pushing for another $4 billion in relief money for the MTA as it continues to struggle through the pandemic.

During a press conference in Midtown on Sunday morning, the New York senator said funding for the MTA must be included in the next spending deal passed by Congress.

The MTA already received $4 billion as part of the initial relief bill back in March, but Schumer said much more is needed as daily subway ridership remains down 70% from last year.

"Without transit funds now, New York City, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey will face a harder recovery even than we have now, and so will the nation," Schumer warned.

Schumer said federal transit relief will help prevent the potential layoffs of more than 9,000 MTA employees.

Congress must pass a spending deal by Friday in order for the government to avoid a shutdown.
