NEW YORK - A neighborhood staple in Chelsea has shut down in a surprise move.
The Park Restaurant and Lounge on 10th Avenue had been in business for 20 years.
People who visited the restaurant on Thursday were shocked to see uprooted trees, mounds of dirt, and empty dining rooms.
"It’s very sad the city’s changing all the time. Not always for the best, but hopefully something amazing will take its place. It won’t be the same. It’s lost its character this area," said Ben Buchanan, a member of The Park's original design team.
"I’m heartbroken the place was always so much fun and food was amazing," said one passerby.
A sign posted on the door said the restaurant was closing to make room for a new building.
Published reports say the property, once a taxi garage, will be demolished and replaced by a 10-story office building with ground level retail.
