The new movie “Tom and Jerry” uses old-school 2-D animation in this live-action/animation hybrid that will be nostalgic for some adults. But it also introduces a new generation to the legendary cartoon rivals who have been around for more than 80 years.

This new edition puts the duo in New York City. Jerry moves into a luxurious hotel as it’s preparing for the wedding of the century. The cat-and-mouse battle ensues when the hotel’s event planner hires Tom to get rid of trouble-making Jerry.

Staten Island native Colin Jost from “Saturday Night Live” stars as the groom-to-be and told NY1’s George Whipple his memories watching Tom and Jerry cartoons as a kid.

What You Need To Know

  • The new film “Tom and Jerry” reunites the cartoon rivals in New York City

  • “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost and Chloe Grace Moretz join in on the hijinks in the live action-animation hybrid film, “Tom and Jerry"

  • Jost talked about recreating classic Tom and Jerry scenes with his kid brother which landed them both in the hospital for stitches

“My brother and I, we’re three years apart, and we would watch it, and then we would try to reenact everything we saw," Jost said. "We broke so much stuff in our house. My brother and I each went to the hospital. I got six sets of stitches on my face and my brother got three. I was older, but I somehow lost in the stitches war."

Jost told Whipple the film “Tom and Jerry” shows an open-for-business New York City that he hopes returns soon after the pandemic is over.

“Oh my God, it's so exciting," Jost said. "I mean, it's New York, and it's a grand old hotel in New York, which feels like such a luxury and escape right now. The idea of staying in a hotel in New York, I mean, who doesn't want to like, get back to where that could happen and where there's exciting things to do in New York? I'm hopeful it's a preview of what New York's gonna be like when it bounces back as soon as possible because I really missed that vibe in the city."

Actress Chloe Grace Moretz plays the hotel event planner. She said she’s an animation nerd and wanted to talk to director Tim Story about animating one of her childhood favorites.

“My first question was, like, this isn't going to be 3-D, you know, computer-generated live-action characters that are moving around, you know - this better be 2-D," Moretz said. "And he was like, 'Yeah, hands down. We're keeping this original. We're making sure this is tried and true.' And that made me super happy.”

"Tom and Jerry" is playing now on HBO Max.
