A spectacle of sea creatures strutted down Surf Avenue in Coney Island for the 42nd annual Mermaid Parade.

Marchers made their way from 21st to 10th Street for Brooklyn's unofficial kickoff to summer. Organizers tout it as the largest art parade in the country.

Thousands attend each year, many in eclectic sea themed costumes, for a celebration of mythology and seaside rituals.

"Being a mermaid and seeing other sister mermaids and having a great old time," Carol Kleinbrahm, from North Carolina, said when asked what she enjoyed most about the parade.

The parade, founded in 1983 as a way to pay homage to Coney Island’s forgotten Mardi Gras, which lasted from 1903 to 1954, also features floats, marching bands and vintage cars.

Joe Coleman, a painter, served as this years King Neptune and his wife, photographer Whitney Ward, served as Queen Mermaid.
