A Brooklyn bishop known for his lavish lifestyle and friendship with Mayor Eric Adams was sentenced to nine years in prison Monday after being convicted of fraud and attempted extortion, according to officials.
Lamor Whitehead, who is also known as the “Bling Bishop,” was found guilty in March of defrauding an elderly woman out of $90,000, officials said. Whitehead also tried to convince a businessman to lend him $500,000, by claiming his ties to City Hall could earn the businessman favorable treatment.
“Bishop Whitehead is in my prayers, and I wish the best for him,” the mayor said in response to the sentencing at his weekly press conference on Monday.
Whitehead acquired national attention in 2022 when he was robbed at gunpoint during a live-streamed sermon in Canarsie.
He also ran for the Brooklyn borough president seat in 2021.
