NEW YORK — There are big changes for drivers on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway after roadway repairs began over the weekend.
The city is shifting lane markings on the triple-cantilever stretch between Atlantic Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge in both directions.
The number of available lanes drops from three to two with a new shoulder, but the two remaining lanes are wider than before.
The city says the shift will reduce weight on the roadway, make it safer, and reduce delays caused by breakdowns and accidents.
It's part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to try to extend the life of the crumbling roadway for another 20 years.
The DOT is warning of substantial delays because of the traffic changes, and it's urging commuters to take mass transit when possible.
