According to Veterinary Emergency Referral Group (VERG) in Gowanus, 9-month-old Stormy was released from their care on Tuesday night.
Stormy was admitted to VERG on Thursday night at approximately 8 p.m. after she was reportedly found by a family member collapsed and badly injured in front of her
Earlier that night, Stormy and her owner were hit by a car while at the crosswalk at 4th Avenue and 101st Street in Bay Ridge.
Stormy's owner was killed and family members say the dog found her way home following the crash, which was more than 10 blocks away.
Upon arrival, Veterinarians and team members immediately began providing emergency care and assessing the dog’s condition, which included injuries to her head, body and hip.
Initial evaluations showed significant trauma to Stormy’s head, a fractured hip, multiple skin abrasions and pulmonary contusions from the impact.
While severe, none of the injuries required surgery. Veterinarians administered supportive treatment to help stabilize Stormy’s condition and facilitate the recovery process, including providing IV fluids, wound care, medications to help manage her pain and oxygen therapy.
“We are pleased with Stormy’s recovery thus far and are confident she will be able to continue her recovery at home following her release,” Dr. Brett Levitzke, the chief medical officer at VERG. “At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and his family. Because of the generosity of those donating to Stormy’s GoFundMe, as well as the support of our partner charity, Positive Tails, the family will be able to go through this difficult ordeal without the burden of paying for her cost of care.”
