The city fire department was investigating the cause of a fire that ripped through five homes in Coney Island early Monday morning, forcing more than a dozen people out of their homes.

Firefighters responded around 12:10 a.m. to the blaze inside 2830 West 19th Street, near Neptune Avenue. It quickly spread to two other buildings, authorities said, before it was put under control by 2 a.m.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no one else was hurt.

The Red Cross was assisting the displaced families, and the city buildings department ordered tenants of three of the buildings to vacate due to fire damage.
