The Bronx got the most snow during this week's storm. While the Sanitation Department appeared to do a good job clearing the streets and highways, not all residents travel by car.
In the Bronx, there are dozens of step streets, often linking one neighborhood to another.
You may recognize the step street that's part of West 167th Street. It connects Shakespeare and Anderson avenues in Highbridge. The steps were made famous in last year’s movie "Joker."
The northern-most borough has many steep hills and several city steps. Neighbors say they usually don't fare too well after snowstorms. This time, they say, is different.
"They did a good job on these 'Joker' steps. That's why I walk down them today," said resident Barry Black.
The Sanitation Department had lots of extra hands. DSNY hired some 600 snow laborers for $15 an hour ahead of the nor'easter.
The workers were sent out in full force across the city during and after the storm. More have been hired since then.
"I saw them from 7:30 in the morning until 11:30 in the morning shoveling after the storm," said resident Jose Daniel Vasquez.
A group of day laborers in Manhattan picked up Friday where the plows left off. They cleared crosswalks and catch basins of snow and slush to prevent icy conditions from forming when the temperature drops at night.
In the Bronx, NY1 checked out three of the city step-streets in different parts of the borough. They were all shoveled and salted.
Some say the city steps look better now than they ever have.
"Usually, there's garbage on the floor, and today it looks clean," said resident Marti Pow.
"They're getting better with it," said resident Marcellus Monroe. "And I feel like New York is cleaning up its city. They're supposed to do that. They should've been doing that."
