Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life and legacy of the civil rights activist, known for his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
As a federal holiday, all nonessential government services will be closed. This includes the Department of Motor Vehicles, courthouses and public libraries. Public schools will also be closed.
There will be no postal service from the USPS. Private companies, such as FedEx and UPS, however, will operate normally.
Most banks will also be closed, as will the New York Stock Exchange.
Much of the retail and service industry, including grocery stores, shopping outlets and restaurant chains, will be open. Target, Walmart and Costco specifically have said they will remain open.
Alternate side parking and regular trash collection are suspended. Residents who normally have trash collected Monday should place it on the curb Monday night for pickup Tuesday.
The subway will run on a regular weekday schedule, with most weekend service changes ending Monday morning. Most buses will run on a modified weekday schedule, with some express routes on a special schedule. Check our transit guide for more.
