A Target employee and a teenage boy were hurt after they fell down an elevator shaft at the employee's store in the Bronx on Thursday, authorities said.

The 29-year-old employee was escorting the 16-year-old boy out of the store at Bronx Terminal Market for allegedly shoplifting around 11 a.m. when the two got into a dispute, the NYPD said.

As the fight escalated, they collided with an elevator door and fell down the shaft, police said.

Emergency responders discovered the teen on top of the elevator, FDNY officials said at a news briefing on Thursday. The employee had fallen around 10 to 15 feet past the elevator into its pit, the officials said.

Firefighters rescued the teen from the shaft "immediately," one official said. He was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

The employee who fell into the pit was rescued "within an hour" using a rope system, the official said. He was hospitalized with critical injuries, according to the official.

On Friday, the NYPD said both victims' injuries were non-life threatening.

In a statement provided to NY1, Target spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo said the company was "grateful to the FDNY and NYPD for their fast response."

"Our hearts go out to those who were injured in this tragic incident at Bronx Terminal Market earlier today, which included a Target team member," Harper-Tibaldo said. "The incident occurred in an elevator shaft adjacent to our store's entrance, and along with the mall owners, we're fully cooperating with the NYPD on their investigation."

The city's Department of Buildings is also investigating the incident, a spokesperson for the department said Thursday.
