Two children, a three-year-old boy and an 11-month-old boy, were found dead with stab wounds in a Bronx apartment Saturday night and their mother has been taken into custody and charged, according to authorities.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., patrol officers for the 46th Precinct were dispatched 246 Echo Place in the Bronx “to a female acting erratic, but nonviolent, with no weapons,” Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said Saturday night during a news conference.
De Ceglie said the 22-year-old female, who police later identified as Dimone Flemming, was trying to burn items inside of the kitchen area of her apartment when police arrived. Officers found Flemming undressed and “acting irrational,” he added.
The officers took the Flemming into custody without incident and waited for an ambulance, De Ceglie said. She was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital for evaluation around 7:50 p.m.
While Flemming was leaving for the hospital, a family friend informed officers that the children were with their father.
At approximately 7:55 p.m., a 911 call was received about two unresponsive babies, who were not breathing, at the same location, De Ceglie said.
When the patrol officer returned to the apartment, they found the 11-month-old boy and 3-year-old boy unresponsive with multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso, he said.
According to De Ceglie, the officers and family members of the children attempted to resuscitate the children until the ambulance arrived. The children were taken to NewYork–Presbyterian Columbia Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
“At this time, we have a person of interest in custody and the investigation is ongoing,” De Ceglie said.
Police arrested Flemming, who is still under observation at St. Barnabas Hospital, Sunday morning. She has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of murder with intention, and two counts of depraved indifference to a person less than 11 years old, according to police.
The father was not taken into police custody.
“This is an incredibly heart-breaking and shocking tragedy,” a spokesperson for the city Department of Social Services said. “We offer our deepest condolences to all who have been impacted and stand ready to provide them with any support they need during this incredibly difficult time.”
