Rain and wind from the remnants of a late-season hurricane are expected to make the end of the week a washout.

What You Need To Know

  • 1-2" of rain are expected

  • Wind gusts up to 45mph are possible

  • The worst of the weather will be on Friday between 4 and 8pm

The hurricane season ends on Nov. 30, but it's unusual to see storms form past October. However, Nicole tracked through the Bahamas and now Florida with just about two weeks to go before Thanksgiving.

The storm will weaken as it moves over the Southeast on Thursday, but it will still have impacts for us in New York City on Friday.

The main concerns are flash flooding from heavy rain and strong wind gusts.

The best chance for heavy rain is right during the Friday night commute. Airport delays are likely. Also, flash flooding is likely on highways but not in homes. The usual trouble spots are the FDR Drive, the West Side Highway, the Belt Parkway and the Harlem River Drive. Look for some lanes to become flooded.

Overall, 1 to 2 inches are rain are forecast. Flooding of the subway or basement apartments, like we saw with Ida, is not expected.

The top winds with the system are expected to gust to 40 to 45 mph. This is enough to bring down isolated tree limbs. Be sure to be careful on Friday night and Saturday morning. Avoid parks if possible, and be wary near scaffolding and construction sites.

On Saturday, conditions will rapidly improve. A line of strong winds and rain showers are likely between 5 and 8 a.m. Then, we will see clearing skies. Behind this weather system is cooler air. After being in the 60s on Friday and Saturday, temperatures will struggle to escape the 40s on Sunday.
