Wow, Wednesday was an unusual day for New York City.

Hail and gusty winds moved across the city, and it may have caught many of you by surprise. However, plenty of you had your phone handy to capture some incredible photos and video.

What You Need To Know

As the hail fell from the sky, there were also large droplets of rain. As you can see in the Tweet below, that rain also made a lot of noise.

The hail fell heavy at times. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the entire region until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Parts of Long Island even had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for people there.

Remember to always stay aware of weather alerts when hail is reported. It's always better to stay under protective covering or indoors until the storm passes.

Once indoors close all drapes, blinds, or shades to prevent any broken glass from entering your home.

Some hail storms can get so severe you may need to seek shelter in your basement. If you do not have a basement, find a safe spot in your home away from any windows. Do your best to remain safe and to prevent glass from hitting you.

Tips on how to stay safe when driving or walking through a hailstorm

  • If walking, find a safe area with shelter and away from windows
  • Grab an umbrella, cover your face and go into a sheltered area immediately
  • When you are driving, slow down your speed or stop
  • Pullover your car safely and once on a roadside, turn your back to the windows and cover yourself with a blanket to protect your face from any broken glass
