We often say that the numbers don't tell the entire story. That's certainly the case with the weather in March 2021. Overall, the month was warmer and drier than normal.
The start of spring often brings some wild weather, and we saw some of that this year.
Our coldest temperature reading happened at the start of the month, with a low of just 21 degrees on March 2. On March 26, we had our warmest reading of 82 degrees. That was a record high for the day! Many New Yorkers said it was HOT OUTSIDE!
The month had a lot of dry weather and also a lot of sunny days. There were 16 days in a row without any measurable rain. Still, we were able to make up for a growing deficit during the second half of the month.
While we only measured 0.16 inches of rain at Central Park in the first half of the month, 3.25 inches of rain fell in the second half of the month. More than half of that rain fell on March 24, with 1.27 inches.
There was also snow in March! Now, there wasn't much, but flakes did fly during the month. On two days, we saw flurries, but there was no measurable accumulation. The 30-year average snowfall in March for NYC is 3.9 inches.
So, we had cold and blustery conditions, snow falling, a few soggy days, and even a hot day in March 2021.
April can sometimes bring some of those same wild swings in weather. We'll have to see how it plays out this year.
