New York City Transit President Richard Davey joined “The Rush Hour” on NY1 Tuesday to address subway safety after a deadly shooting on a Brooklyn train and two train derailments this month.
The MTA and NYPD are still looking into the death of a man that occurred during a dispute over loud music on a Manhattan-bound 3 train, Davey said. The NYPD says no arrests have been made.
“Our hearts are broken,” Davey said. “We are cooperating with NYPD and as they usually do, they will find this perpetrator no doubt.”
He said that the MTA has made a commitment to install more security cameras by next year, which has proven beneficial in assisting police with transit crimes.
“We’re moving quite well. We’re at about 20% of the fleet,” he said. “We’ve already had to capture two crimes on video which we’ve been able to share with police and in both instances, I believe they have a suspect in custody as a result of that work.”
With two train derailments this month — one in the Upper West Side and another an F train at Coney Island — Davey emphasizes the safety of riders as his top priority.
“Customers should feel confident the system is safe,” he said. “We will take a look at the issue and make sure we address it.”
