Long Island Rail Road commuters traveling from Far Rockaway to Manhattan will see a new discounted option to purchase tickets beginning Sunday.
The new discounted ticket will cost $7 during peak hours and $5 off-peak. Commuters currently pay $12.50 during peak hours and $9.25 off-peak.
“This has been a long time coming – and it's made possible by some high-tech engineering by the MTA staff. But it wouldn't have happened without the passion of our elected partners and transit advocates. Their advocacy had a huge impact,” said Janno Lieber, MTA chairman and CEO.
The initiative is similar to the LIRR’s CityTicket program, which offers discounted tickets between various parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The CityTicket was not previously available for Far Rockaway commuters as the route passes through Nassau County before returning to the city.
The MTA said it will be using geolocation technology to ensure that only riders who board at the Far Rockaway station can access the discount. Commuters using the TrainTime app will be required to share their location to confirm their proximity to the station before purchasing the ticket.
According to the MTA, tickets are only valid on the day of purchase at the Far Rockaway station, but commuters can use the discount when returning from Manhattan by purchasing a round-trip ticket before departing Queens.
The Far Rockaway discount will also coincide with the expansion of the CityTicket program to peak-hour trains for the first time since the program’s creation 20 years ago.
