Aaron Korinblum has lived in Co-Op City for more than 50 years. He says the new Metro-North stations coming to the Bronx will be very helpful.
“It’s going to make people’s lives a lot easier for everybody getting up to Westchester and into the city. Dealing with the express bus and the traffic — it’s crazy. And with crime on the subways, it will be safer,” Korinblum said.
Officials broke ground Friday on four new Metro-North stations. They will be located at Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park and Co-Op City.
The stations will provide direct access to Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall. Korinblum says the new stations will decrease the amount of time he sits in traffic.
“It’ll be quicker, too. Instead of it taking [90 minutes] by taking the express bus, it will take 20 minutes.” Korinblum said. “It will be much better.”
The average salary in the four neighborhoods the new stations will be located in is around $61,000 per year. Officials believe the new stations will create greater earning potential for residents of the Bronx.
“This is a borough — a community — that truly matters, but people in the past have not made decisions that make them feel that way here in the Bronx. And that’s what we are rectifying here today. We are talking about a way to enhance economic development around our transit hub,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said.
Officials say the new stations will cut commute times by at least 50 minutes.
Rita Amoatang works at a hotel in Manhattan and says that depending on the day and time, it could make her commute easier.
“I think it’s going to be good. I think it’s going to be good for people. Maybe, it’s going to favor me. Maybe, it’s not going to favor me. But it’s going to be good,” Amoatang, a Co-Op City resident, said.
The president of the Riverbay Corporation board that manages Co-Op City says that while they are excited about the new stations, they are waiting to hear about potential parking options.
The stations are expected to open in 2027.
