The MTA is poised to receive a $116 million grant for 230 new battery electric buses, according to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s office.
The funding is part of Schumer’s “Green New Wheel” push as part of the bipartisan infrastructure legislation signed into law last November. Money will also be used to start a workplace training program.
"While the wheels on the MTA buses go round-and-round, our effort to reduce carbon emissions and clean the air across NYC also has to keep going," Schumer said in a statement. "This win brings us all one stop closer to that goal."
A Schumer spokesperson said the procurement process will kick off this fall, with the buses expected to arrive by 2025.
Per Schumer’s office, the MTA plans to use the money to replace buses at the Kingsbridge, Gunhill, Mother Clara Hale, Grand Ave, Queens Village, and East New York depots.
