Aaron Judge hit his MLB-leading 60th home run of the season in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, closing within one long ball of tying Roger Maris’ single-season American League record.

The historic, 430-foot deep shot into the left-field bleachers occurred in the ninth inning off a sinker from Pirates' reliever Will Crowe. The Yankees trailed 8-5 after Judge rounded the bases — and took a rare curtain call.

That deficit didn't last long. A double, a walk and a bloop single later, Giancarlo Stanton stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs. He ended the game with a walk-off grand slam, completing the Yankees' stunning, five-run, ninth-inning rally and securing a 9-8 victory for the Pinstripes.

Judge is the first MLB player to hit 60 home runs in a season since Barry Bonds (73) and Sammy Sosa (64) in 2001.

With Tuesday’s home run, Judge has tied Babe Ruth for the eighth-most long balls ever hit in a season. Ruth, who hit 714 home runs during his 22-year, Hall of Fame career, smashed 60 in 1927.

Ruth held the home run record for decades, but Roger Maris one-upped his fellow Yankee slugger when he sent 61 over the fence in 1961.

Roger Maris Jr. and Kevin Maris, sons of the former player, both attended Tuesday night's game.

Judge — the sixth player to hit at least 60 long balls in a single season — is having a historic campaign. The AL MVP-favorite is leading the MLB in home runs, RBIs, runs, wins above replacement, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS+, extra-base hits and total bases.

His 60 home runs are the most by a right-handed batter in AL history. The 30-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season.
