BRONX, N.Y. — Many fans attending Sunday night’s game at Yankee Stadium noticed lots of officers and police vehicles around the ballpark’s perimeter.
The NYPD said that was part of its complex security plan response to Saturday’s shooting outside of the Padres-Nationals game in Washington, D.C., where gunshots outside the stadium sent fans into a panic.
Yankees fan Christina Argonish said the shooting Saturday weighed heavily on her mind.
“Just feeling sad for what happened yesterday and wondering will those people be OK because they experienced trauma,” Argonish said. “I just want to send them the best wishes. Please heal in time.”
Some fans went into the dugout, others hid under their seats and some ran for the exits in Washington Saturday night following an exchange of gunfire between two cars outside the stadium, in which three people were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
In response to that shooting, the NYPD told NY1 it had a complex security plan in place for Sunday night’s game between the Yankees and the Red Sox in the Bronx, which included a plan in the event of an active shooter. The NYPD also said the plan involved officers who were intimately familiar with the grounds, the interior layout and the security team.
“You got to take precautions coming here,” said Red Sox fan Patrick Matthews. “You got to be aware of your surroundings.”
Matthews, who lives in Massachusetts, says he wanted his visit to the Bronx to celebrate his 24th birthday to be a safe one, which is why he devised this game plan.
“You want to get here early and get in the stadium so you’re not out on the streets walking around,” he said, adding when the game ended, he would leave right away.
“You don’t want to be hanging out around here, especially wearing a Red Sox jersey here in New York,” he said.
Lisa and Mario Marroquin from southern California are big Yankees fans who had never seen the Bronx Bombers play in person. While they both found the situation in Washington, D.C. tragic, they took some comfort in knowing the shootings did not take place inside the stadium.
“Going into these stadiums, they take care of us,” said Lisa Marroquin. “I have that in my heart that I will be OK while I am here.”
“Incidents like that occur, and it’s unfortunate that some people just take it upon themselves to do crazy things,” said Mario Marroquin, “but you can’t let that dictate how you enjoy yourself.”
The NYPD also told NY1 its security plan for Sunday night’s game included resources from the NYPD’s Counterterrorism Bureau.
