WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Football Team made history Monday morning, naming Jason Wright as the NFL’s first Black team president.

What You Need To Know

  • Jason Wright becomes the NFL's first Black team president

  • He played seven seasons in the league before going into business

  • At 38, Wright is also now the league's youngest president

The surprise announcement was made on ABC’s "Good Morning America."

Wright, who will be in charge of all of the franchise’s business operations, played seven seasons in the league as a running back for the 49ers, Falcons, Browns and Cardinals before going into business. He most recently served as a partner for the consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

At 38, Wright is also now the NFL’s youngest team president.

"I’m a football player first," Wright told GMA. "… And then (I) became a businessman and cut my teeth … helping some of the most complex and most important organizations around the world transform over the last few years. So for me, it’s personal, an opportunity to help bring together my two worlds in a really unique way in a really unique time. And the fact that I happen to be Black, and the most qualified person for this, is a boost."

Wright joins the franchise during a time of turmoil. Last month, the team announced, after 87 years, it is changing its name from the Redskins, buckling to pressure from sponsors. Three of its minority ownership partners, who account for a 40% stake in the franchise, are trying to sell their shares. And 15 female former team employees and two female sportswriters recently accused the organization of sexual harassment

Wright said he’s excited to join the franchise during a “new day” and praised owner Daniel Snyder and his wife, Tonya, for taking the necessary action needed to put the organization on a better path.

Wright replaced Bruce Allen, who was fired Dec. 30 after 10 seasons.

The franchise is simply being called the “Washington Football Team” for the 2020 season while it decides on a new nickname moving forward.
