The city saw a drop in overall crime for the eighth straight month in August, with shootings down by nearly 15% year over year, NYPD data released Wednesday shows.

The city’s overall crime index dropped by 6.4% last month compared to August 2023, with a double-digit drop in murders, as well as drops in robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies and auto thefts, the NYPD said.

Citywide, the NYPD recorded a 53.1% decline in murders year over year in August, from 32 to 15; an 8.7% decline in robberies, from 1,578 to 1,440; a 7.2% drop in burglaries, from 1,205 to 1,118; a 9.5% drop in grand larcenies, from 4,695 to 4,251; and a 5.5% drop in auto thefts, from 1,504 to 1,421.

Shooting incidents, meanwhile, were down 14.9% year over year, from 87 logged in August 2023 to 74 logged last month, the department said.

“The steep, continuing declines in shootings and murders in New York City are a testament to the hard work being done each day and night by the dedicated men and women of this police department,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said in a statement. “Whether they are patrol officers walking a beat inside a housing development or seasoned detectives working some of the most complex investigations in the world, NYPD cops understand this basic truth: Fewer guns in the hands of criminals translate to safer neighborhoods and enhanced quality of life for all New Yorkers.”

The NYPD did log increases in two major crime categories year over year, with reported rapes up 8.6%, from 116 in August 2023 to 126 last month, and felony assaults up 0.4%, from 2,488 to 2,498.

The city also saw a 111% jump in hate crimes year over year, from 27 in August 2023 to 57 last month, primarily driven by anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim incidents, according to the data.

Last month, the NYPD logged 19 anti-Jewish incidents, up from 12 in August of last year, and 17 anti-Muslim incidents, up from 0 in August of last year.
