Over 100 pounds of drugs worth around $4 million were recovered from a Bronx pizzeria across from a school last week, authorities said Monday.
The seizure took place at Mexzzarella Pizza in the Soundview section of the Bronx Thursday, according to a press release issued by multiple law enforcement agencies. Over 100 pounds of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, heroin and oxycodone were recovered.
“This drug trafficking organization was cooking up more than pizza in the Bronx. The large stash of cocaine found in the basement of Mexzzarella Pizza is very significant because it had the potential to supply drug networks throughout the Northeast,” Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino said in the press release.
Authorities said Gaudencio Rosendo Perez, 47, Zulema Cardenas Espinoza, 53, and Alexander Samboy, 45, were arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first and third degree. Perez was additionally charged with one count of operating as a major trafficker.
According to authorities, officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the NYPD and other agencies conducted a search of the Soundview Avenue pizzeria Thursday and found various drugs and drug paraphernalia, including 42 kilograms of suspected cocaine, one kilogram of heroin/fentanyl, 1,000 glassine envelopes containing suspected oxycodone and fentanyl, rocks of cocaine, a kilo press and approximately $40,000 in the basement.
Agents and officers also took 100 vials of suspected crack cocaine and a yellow powdery substance on the ground floor, according to authorities.
“This highly profitable Bronx based narcotics operation appeared to operate as a wholesaler and distributor of cocaine and fentanyl laced products, and was advertised as an 'inexpensive' Mexican pizza spot. Investigators recovered cocaine, crack and fentanyl in bags, vials and kilo sized portions from Mexzzarella in the Soundview section,” Bridget Brennan, the city’s special narcotics prosecutor, said in the release.
The pizzeria is located across the street from P.S. 69, a public elementary school.
