A 15-year-old male was killed after being shot in the abdomen Wednesday afternoon at McLaughlin Park in Brooklyn, according to police.
The victim was a student at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, which is two blocks away from the downtown Brooklyn park, police said. Students were dismissed from school at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for a half day — the shooting took place shortly after dismissal at around 1:45 p.m., according to the NYPD.
Police said the teenager was sitting on a bench at McLaughlin Park at the intersection of Tillary Street and Jay Street with two females when two males in ski masks approached. After an exchange of words and a fist fight, one of the males then took out a firearm and shot the victim one time in the abdomen, officials said.
The perpetrators fled eastbound on Tillary Street towards Adams Street on foot, the NYPD said. The 15-year-old was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he was eventually pronounced deceased.
There were at least 30 other people in the park at the time of the shooting, according to officials.
Police are looking for at least two school-aged suspects, they said Wednesday.
