A McDonald’s worker who was shot in the neck Monday reportedly over cold french fries has now died from his injuries.

Friday afternoon, dozens of community leaders gathered outside the McDonald’s in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Fulton Street to call for an end to the violence.

“This cannot be an everyday occurrence in our community,” said Sharmaine Byrd, a pastor who serves on the 79th Precinct Clergy Council.

Police arrested 20-year-old Michael Morgan for the shooting of Matthew Webb, the worker.

“We are our brother’s keeper. We are killing people in our own community,” said Gabelous Monestime, the president of the clergy council, which organized the Friday event.

The rally came on the day the NYPD released new crime data. The numbers tell two stories. Police have made 2,752 arrests related to guns, a 27-year high. They have also confiscated more than 4,300 guns of the streets this year.

Yet still, shootings in July were up 13% compared to July 2021.

“The problem with the guns is the more they take off the street, the more will come in,” said Monestime.

Just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, police said an 18-year-old shot and killed 19-year-old Dereck Chen in a BJ’s parking lot in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Police believe the younger teen tried robbing the older one before the shooting.

“We need to get back to getting people to think,” said NYPD Assistant Chief Judith Harrison, the commanding officer of NYPD Patrol Borough Brooklyn North.

Harrison said she’s encouraged so many people came out Friday, angry about the violence. But the reality, she acknowledged, is it won’t be the last time they come out.

“My wish, my prayer, would be that we don’t have to be out here again,” she said. “Sadly I feel like we will though.”
