Dogs have the ability to sniff out a lot of things, including explosives, drugs, and fire arms. And they’re often used by the NYPD to help the solve crimes.
But a new NYPD program has dogs sniffing out electronics.
Using their more than 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses — compared to just 6 million in humans — these dogs can sniff out a chemical coating that is on the memory of many electronic devices.
Two black labs joined Ruschell Boone Monday, with their handlers NYPD officers Anel Capursi and Matthew Gullo. Sgt. Jamie Sitko also joined to discuss the program and how it works.
The dogs have helped with cases involving child pornography, financial crimes and terrorism investigations, police said.
The dogs joined the force three years ago and the department plans to add two more with funding from the New York City Police Foundation.
