With summer in full swing, safety around water is on the minds of New Yorkers more than ever.

Shawn Slevin, executive director and founder of Swim Strong Foundation, joined "News All Day" to share some safety tips everyone should keep in mind when headed to pools and beaches.

Her tips include staying close to kids around water; using a life jacket and not a flotation device; swimming only where there is a lifeguard; and always having a buddy while swimming. Slevin added that knowing your limits is also key.

But it's not just about being safe while swimming, according to Slevin. Knowing what to do in the case of water-related events like hurricanes is important too.

Slevin's organization also advocates for water safety year-round. There's a "know before you go" campaign in some schools that she's working to get into all schools.

According to Slevin, kids need the knowledge "that helps them navigate water safely."
