QUEENS, N.Y. — Police on Wednesday released surveillance footage of a suspect accused of attacking a 70-year-old Sikh man in Queens over the weekend.

Authorities said the man seen on the video approached the victim, who is a tourist visiting from India, and punched him in the face around 6:45 a.m. on Sunday at 95th Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard in South Richmond Hill.

The attack was unprovoked, according to police, and the suspect immediately fled the location on foot.

The victim, Nirmal Singh, who spoke to NY1 through a translator, Harpreet Singh Toor, said he was able to walk to the Sikh Cultural Society, where he has been staying during his visit, following the attack.

At the temple, a good Samaritan noticed Singh’s injuries and called for help, Toor said.

Singh was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was treated for pain and a laceration to the face, police said.

Authorities said Singh was wearing traditional Sikh articles of faith at the time of the attack, and the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the incident.

The NYPD is asking that anyone with information regarding the attack call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477.)
