House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday that flags will fly at full-staff during Monday's inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
President Joe Biden had ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days, through Jan. 28, to mark the death of former President Jimmy Carter, whose state funeral was held last week.
“On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump,” Johnson said in a statement. “The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter.”
Last week on Truth Social, Trump wrote that “Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my inauguration… Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it.”
On Monday, flags flew at full-staff at Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also ordered flags to fly at full staff at the Texas Capitol and other state government buildings for Trump’s inauguration.
