Trump unveiled the proposal during his rally Sunday in Prescott Valley, Arizona, where he picked up an endorsement from the National Border Patrol Council, the union representing agents.
“This will ensure that we can hire and keep the Border Patrol agents that we need,” he said.
The former president has made the U.S.-Mexico border a key focus of his campaign.
Trump’s campaign promise comes eight months after he led an effort to sink a bipartisan border bill that would have created funding to hire thousands of new border patrol agents, buy the latest in detection equipment, overhaul asylum laws and give the president new authorities to close the border.
Trump reportedly wanted GOP lawmakers to reject the agreement because he hoped to campaign on unsolved border issues. Republicans in Congress, however, insisted it made too many concessions to Democrats.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign issued a statement after Sunday’s announcement saying, “Trump doesn’t care about solving problems, he only wants to run on one.”
“There’s only one candidate focused on tackling issues for the American people, has taken on transnational gangs, and is focused on keeping our communities safe – Vice President Kamala Harris,” said campaign spokesperson Matt Corridoni.
The Border Patrol union endorsed the failed border bill. But that did not stop it from announcing its support for Trump.
“If we allow border czar Harris to win this election, every city, every community in this great country is going to go to hell,” said Border Patrol agent Paul Perez, president of the union’s Local 3307 chapter. “The untold millions of people, unvetted, who she has allowed into this country, that are committing murders, rapes, robberies, burglaries and every other crime will continue to put our country in peril.
Republicans have regularly mischaracterized Harris’ worked in the Biden administration related to immigration. She was never a “border czar,” but rather was assigned by the president to address the root causes of migration from Central America.
