In “War,” due out next week, Woodward, best known for his reporting in the Watergate scandal, writes that then-President Trump secretly sent Putin COVID-19 test machines for his personal use as the virus began to spread in 2020. Woodward also reports that a Trump aide, who is not named in the book, said the former president and Putin have had as many as seven calls since Trump left office.

Trump and his campaign have denied the reporting.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the claim about the calls is “not true.” He, however, has confirmed the U.S. sent COVID tests to Russia.

“There were no secret shipments,” he told The Associated Press via a messaging app. “The pandemic was starting back then. Many countries were exchanging equipment. We sent ventilators. Testers came from America.”

Peskov made similar comments to Bloomberg on Wednesday.

It was reported in 2020 that the United States received medical supplies from Russia, including ventilators and personal protective equipment. The Kremlin claimed it was a donation; the U.S. said it was purchase.

Woodward writes that Putin told Trump of the COVID-19 tests going to Russia: “I don’t want you to tell anybody because people will get mad at you, not me. They don't care about me.”

The Kremlin spokesman’s statements partially contradict the furious denials from Trump’s camp.

"None of these made up stories by Bob Woodward are true and are the work of a truly demented and deranged man who suffers from a debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” said Trump campaign Communications Director Stephen Cheung.

Trump told ABC News the claims are false.

"He's a storyteller. A bad one,” Trump said of Woodward. “And he's lost his marbles.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s opponent in next month’s election, has seized on Woodward’s reporting, telling radio host Howard Stern on Tuesday: "People in America were struggling to get tests, and this guy is sending them to Russia, to a murderous dictator for his personal use? That is just the most recent stark example of who Trump is.”
