Sources familiar with the matter told The Associated Press that an agent was accused of groping a member of Harris' staff.

Senior officials in the Office of the Vice President “were alerted by the USSS about an incident involving an agent,” according to a spokesperson.

“The Office of the Vice President take the safety of staff seriously. We have zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” the spokesperson said.

Harris’ presidential campaign did not respond to a request for comment and neither her government office nor the Secret Service expanded on the allegation, but multiple outlets reported on Wednesday that an agent was accused of sexually assaulting a government staffer in Wisconsin. The agent and the Harris staffer were in the state to prepare for a campaign event that was rescheduled, according to the reports.

The agent was on a trip with Harris staff members last week in Wisconsin to scout possible locations for a visit from the Democratic presidential nominee when the group went out for dinner and drinks. The agent, who appeared to be drunk, is accused of groping the woman in the presence of others after they went back to the hotel, according to the people who spoke to the AP.

Long scrutinized for misconduct and shortfallings by its agents, the Secret Service has faced increased criticism in the wake of two assassination attempts on the life of former President Donald Trump in recent months. A bipartisan Senate report published on Wednesday on the July attempt — which left Trump wounded, two rallygoers shot and a third killed — found that multiple Secret Service failures that day were "foreseeable, preventable, and directly related to the events resulting in the assassination attempt.”
