Democrat Laura Gillen is launching her first TV and digital ad as part of her bid to unseat a freshman Republican in New York’s 4th congressional district in Nassau County.

The ad, shared first with NY1, focuses on Gillen's biography, telling the story of her grandfather who immigrated from Italy and highlighting her work “two generations later” as Hempstead town supervisor.

“I cut taxes, eliminated wasteful spending and took on corrupt politicians in both parties,” she says in the TV spot.

The ad buy costs six figures, according to Gillen’s campaign, with time reserved starting Tuesday on cable television, streaming and digital platforms.

Gillen is pursuing a rematch against Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, who beat her by just shy of 10,000 votes in 2022. It is one of several districts across the state that Democrats are eying as potential pickup opportunities as they look to regain control of the U.S. House.

In the ad, Gillen also says that, if elected to Congress, she will “fight to secure our border and put an end to the migrant crisis” and “fund our police to keep Nassau County families safe.”

During the 2022 midterm elections, when Gillen lost to D’Esposito, crime was a defining issue in congressional races across New York, especially on Long Island. D’Esposito, a former NYPD detective, has repeatedly criticized New York’s bail reforms.

If the special election earlier this year in New York’s 3rd congressional district is any indication, the surge of asylum seekers into New York is poised to be a defining issue of this campaign season.

In that special election, Democrat Tom Suozzi tried to turn the tables on Republicans on the immigration issue, attacking them for not backing a Senate-crafted bipartisan border deal. Gillen has already shown signs she is willing to try a similar tactic.

D’Esposito previously labeled that Senate-crafted bill an “election year scheme” and has urged lawmakers to pass a Republican House bill, dubbed H.R. 2.
