The district consists of a small portion of the northern Bronx and the southern half of Westchester County, including White Plains, Mount Vernon, Yonkers, New Rochelle and Rye.

In a speech on election night, Latimer told his supporters that they gave him the first major step toward the opportunity to go to Washington.

“Let me try to do what I can do to bring some positive result to what’s happening down there,” he said. "I have never viewed an election as a blank check from you to me. It is a promissory note from me to you."

Latimer said he aims to deliver on that note.

“If I can be the friend that I’ve always tried to be in Washington, then I will deliver on that promissory note,” he said. “That is my intent starting tomorrow morning, to make sure that I am prepared to be as good a congressman as I can be, because that is what you voted for and that is what I owe you.”

Bowman, meanwhile, thanked his voters for supporting him and his movement.

“This movement was never just about me. It was never just about (NY-16). It was never just about this race and this moment,” he said. “This movement has always been about justice. It has always been about humanity. It has always been about equality. And it has always been about our collective liberation.”
