Just hours after the previous contract expired, Con Edison, the city's primary power provider, reached a tentative agreement with its employees.
Union members had threatened to walk off the job Sunday. The Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2 represents about 8,000 Con Edison employees, including field workers and office workers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Westchester County.
In a letter to its members, UWUA Local 1-2 provided some of the highlights of the new four-year collective bargaining agreement with Con Edison. They include an enhanced medical plan and a general wage increase, with an upgraded wage acceleration plan in place.
Con Edison also released a statement, saying the company looks forward to ratifying the contract.
"Both parties engaged in thoughtful and productive discussions, making the tentative agreement possible. The company believes the proposal is fair and equitable for employees and customers and looks forward to ratification by the union's membership," a spokesperson for Con Edison said.
