New York City Mayor Eric Adams will be attending Tuesday’s State of the Union address in Washington as the guest of Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the mayor's office said Monday.
Each House lawmaker is allowed to invite one guest to attend the president’s annual remarks from the House chamber. Lawmakers often select their guest to highlight a particular policy or issue they are focused on.
Adams and President Joe Biden have a relationship that goes back several years. Last year, Adams dubbed himself the “Biden of Brooklyn,” telling Politico they are both “these blue collar guys.”
The two have met several times, including to discuss the issue of gun violence and crime in New York City. Adams even visited the White House when he was just a candidate for mayor.
Adams, though, has recently also put pressure on the Biden administration, urging them to provide additional resources to help cities like New York address the surge of migrants.
The State of the Union begins at 9 p.m. Tuesday and will be carried live on Spectrum News NY1.
