NEW YORK — NY1 on Thursday will host the only televised forum in the race for City Council speaker, arguably one of the most powerful roles after the mayor.

• What does the City Council speaker do?

It's a position that will be determined by Council members, not New York City voters, in January.

Current speaker, Corey Johnson, is term limited, and seven Council members are looking to succeed him and lead the new Council.

NY1 political anchor Errol Louis will moderate the forum Thursday at 7 p.m.
