NEW YORK — Only 35% of voters in New York think the United States is on the right track compared to 64% who say it’s in the wrong direction, and 52% say the coronavirus is not at all under control in this country, according to an AP survey of the American electorate.

The findings are based on preliminary results from AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of about 133,000 voters and nonvoters — including 2,222 voters and 616 nonvoters in New York — conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

Seventeen percent of the voters surveyed say COVID-19 in the country is completely or mostly under control. Thirty-one percent say it’s somewhat under control.

Although just short of a majority, 42% of New York voters said the pandemic is the most important issue facing the United States today. The second-most important issue is the economy at 27%, followed by health care (9%), racism (7%), and climate change (4%).

The voters also gave poor marks to the U.S. economy, with 38% saying the economic conditions in the country are excellent or good while 62% called them not so good or poor.

Here are the New York voter demographics Biden won over Trump, according to AP VoteCast:

  • Voters under the age of 45
  • Older voters
  • Black voters
  • Latino voters
  • College-educated voters
  • Voters in cities

Here are the demographics Trump won in New York:

  • White voters
  • Voters in small towns and rural areas

Here are the demographics where the two presidential candidates were about tied in New York:

  • Voters without a college degree
  • Suburban voters

AP VoteCast also surveyed registered New York voters who did not cast a ballot. 29% say that was because they don't like politics generally, 21% say their vote doesn't matter and 15% say they don't like the candidates.

Sixty-five percent of nonvoters were younger than 45, according to AP VoteCast, and 73% did not have a college degree.
