New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday over state and local taxes (SALT) and what Cuomo says is a disproportionate number of New Yorkers paying more to the federal government than what they get back in return.
The White House said Cuomo requested the meeting, which lasted roughly an hour and took place in the Oval Office.
Cuomo is an outspoken critic of the 2017 Republican tax overhaul, arguing it hurts New Yorkers and the state.
The SALT deduction is now capped at $10,000. The deduction used to be unlimited.
The New York governor did not wish be interviewed by NY1/Spectrum News at the White House.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere, sent out this statement regarding the closed-door meeting:
"Today, President Trump met with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at the Governor's request. This meeting demonstrates the President's willingness to meet regularly with our Nation's governors. President Trump talked about the positive impacts of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on the American economy, and the President listened to the Governor's concerns regarding SALT. The President reiterated the negative impact that high taxes in states like New York have on hardworking families and job creators. The President discussed economic growth opportunities for the State of New York, including helping lower energy prices throughout the entire Northeast by allowing low-cost, American energy to thrive with fracking and pipeline systems. The two also discussed the need to update America's outdated infrastructure system. And, the President raised his concerns to Governor Cuomo about Democrats' support of late term abortions."
This is Cuomo's second meeting with Trump since he took office. The prior meeting concerned transportation and infrastructure.
