Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays as participants in the Valley to the Sea Half Marathon and 10k and 5k races take their way through Wailuku and Maalaea on Saturday, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.

According to officials, the half marathon race will begin at 6:30 a.m. Participants will start at Iao Valley State Monument, make their way along the county’s Iao Valley Road to Main Street, then turn right onto South High Street that links to Honoapiilani Highway.

At the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and North Kihei Road in Maalaea, runners will face traffic as they continue along North Kihei Road. At the Kealia Boardwalk, they will cross the road from the mauka to makai side. Police will assist with traffic control.

The race route will then head back along North Kihei Road toward Honoapiilani Highway. Once on Honoapiilani Highway, runners will head west, taking Maalaea Road to Maui Ocean Center.

The 10k race begins at 6 a.m. and the 5k race begins at 6:10 a.m. Both start and end at the Maui Ocean Center.

Runners in the 10k route will head north on Maalaea Road and then along Honoapiilani Highway. They’ll then head east along North Kihei Road, turn around at Kealia Pond Boardwalk and head back toward Honoapiilani Highway, then back to Maui Ocean Center via Maalaea Road. Runners in the 10k will not cross North Kihei Road.

The 5k route will take runners from Maui Ocean Center via Maalaea Road heading east along Honoapiilani Highway. They’ll turn around at the North Kihei Road intersection and head back to Maui Ocean Center.

During the race, police officers will be stationed at major intersections and cones will be set up for the race around 5:30 a.m. The half marathon will end by noon.

HDOT asks motorists to obey all signs and traffic controls and to drive cautiously around race participants.
