Thousands of University of Hawaii students across six campuses will join the morning commute starting Monday, as they begin the spring 2025 semester.

Motorists are asked to plan accordingly as students head to their respective campuses.

Areas around UH Manoa, including both directions of the H-1 Freeway and surrounding surface streets, are expected to increase traffic as about 20,000 students start classes.

Traffic is also expected to increase around Leeward Community College, Kapiolani Community College, Honolulu Community College, UH West Oahu and Windward Community College.

Officials say traffic is generally heavier during the first two weeks of the semester. However, it will be lighter than pre-pandemic years since more courses are being held online or partially online, and more UH employees are teleworking up to two days each week.

Students, faculty, staff and administrators are encouraged to consider alternative modes of transportation, such as TheBus or the Skyline rail system. For those who live near campus, consider bicycling, walking, skateboarding, etc.
