Five residential buildings are still without power in the Bronx after a water main break in Bedford Park Monday night flooded streets, sending water pouring into buildings and submerging cars.
Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said the power in those buildings should be restored Thursday, and that New York City Emergency Management crews were still on the scene working with landlords and property owners on building access and repairs to boilers.
“We understand the frustration and concerns at the delays, city agencies are working as quickly as possible,” Gibson said in a statement. “[The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development] is also monitoring this work in the event that emergency action must be taken to expedite this process for power restoration to the remaining residential buildings.”
Hundreds of Bronx residents were left without water in the immediate aftermath of the water main break.
FDNY officials said several first-floor apartments had to be evacuated, and one person was rescued from a vehicle that had been trapped in rising water due to rising water.
The city's Department of Environmental Protection identified the source of the flooding as a 48-inch water main break beneath Mosholu Parkway, located about a block from Webster Avenue.
