Gov. Kathy Hochul said drone activity caused problems at Stewart International Airport in Orange County Friday night.

She says the runways of the airport, located west of Newburgh, were shut down for about an hour because of drones reported in the airspace nearby.

“This has gone too far,” Hochul said in a statement.

Meanwhile, elected officials have been speaking out after a series of unexplained drone sightings in New York and elsewhere in the region.

Some criticized the response of investigators, while others tried to quell concerns.

“How can we, as the United States, have this going on and just be told to look away, ignore it, it’s no big deal,” Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella said.

On Thursday night, Facebook community groups blew up with posts from residents saying drones were flying above their homes. Over the past few weeks, New Jersey residents have reported drone sightings.

The White House says the reported drone or unmanned aircraft sightings do not pose any threat or have a foreign nexus, however, it is unclear where they are coming from.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security say, “We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods, but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection. To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully. There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space. ”

The FAA says certification is needed to operate a drone, with rules also stating drones can only be flown during the window between a half-hour before sunrise and a half-hour after sunset.
